Iceland saved me from homophobia

I grew up in the US, in a homophobic southern state. Moving to bigger and more liberal cities didn't seem to help. I decided to move abroad. I tried a few places, but Iceland was my first stop. I met my current husband, he is Icelandic. I've been welcomed into his family, I've met so many friends. My coworkers and everyone I meet treats me as another, equal member of society. I've learned not to feel shame for being who I am, and I do not have to worry about health emergencies ruining my finances, or what will happen during end of life issues.
Iceland gave me love, and a new life where I can live free as myself. It's my favorite country in the world.
