My Father in Iceland

My Father in Iceland

This brief paragraph and photo was posted online in the NY Times in 2009, under their "Why We Travel" section. I wrote the passage and took the photo. I don't think NY Times has any copyright claim...

Vatnajokull, Iceland — This is my father, Elmer (Bud), on Iceland's -- and Europe's -- biggest glacier. Vatnajokull covers about an 1/8th of Iceland. My wonderful friend Imba, after sizing up the weather and the road, skipped the offer for an organized escort and drove us up and up, through the clouds, until we reached an outstation. We then took a ski mobile ride (a first for my father, me) and this picture was taken at a break. My father raised six kids without many exotic vacations and my mother was afraid to fly, so such trips are new. To all those children out there -- go somewhere with your parent/parents! And thanks again to Imba, who is Iceland's best guide and hostess. Though the guys at the ski mobile station were awesome, too.
