"You Can't Make This Stuff Up!"

In 1999 I was on location, shooting for a DISCOVERY TV special: MARTIAL ARTS: THE REAL STORY (we were documenting Iceland's traditional wrestling form, GLIMA). Together with my co-director, we decided to take a little hike up a trial, located near to our bed and breakfast. We were told to drive on a road that crossed a small "shallow" stream. No problem. After reaching the edge of the water we began to proceed towards the other side. Midway, rivulets of water began to stream in. As we continued to drive, that trickle turned into a tsunami, quickly flooding the car and forcing us to abandon ship. No help from any of the bystanders, however, a vacationing bunch of Parisians had come to Iceland with (believe it or not) their tree pruning truck. They quickly sprung into action pulling out our vehicle. Afterwards we shared cigars and wine. Karmically, it bode well for a future return, not to mention all the opportunities for one-up story-telling.
